“Hey,” Bree said as the girls wound down Shelly’s game. “I actually have an idea for how we could use this for the extravaganza.”

“What is it?” Jules asked. She twirled Tomoko’s basketball. “I don’t think they’ll let us throw things at each other.”

“No,” Bree said. “I was thinking about switching jammers! You know how Lo told us that in jams the jammer can pass their star helmet panty to another team member?”

“Only the pivot,” Kenzie said. “That’s the blocker who wears a helmet panty with a stripe on it.”

“Fine, the pivot then,” Bree said. She swiped the basketball from Jules. “Well, let’s just pretend this ball is the jammer panty. I can get it to the pack super fast. But then we could practice passing it on and another player taking over as jammer.”

“The Tomonater would be perfect for that!” Shelly said.

Tomoko’s eyebrows went up. “I would?”

“Of course,” Shelly said. “You’re awesome when it comes to passes, or really anything that combines derby skills with basketball skills!”

The other Daredevils grinned and nodded.

“Sweet,” Bree said. “It’s settled. Tomoko can be the pivot during the extravaganza. Let’s go back and really show off to the others!”

She tossed the basketball to Tomoko and turned for the bench.

Tomoko beamed as she caught the ball. She couldn’t wait to wear the special pivot panty over her helmet. In derby, being a pivot was like being leader of the blockers. She would get to step up at camp after all.

“Wow,” Kenzie said. She squinted at the looming buildings. “It’s so hard to find your way around here. I don’t even remember which side we came from!”

“Hmmm …” Jules narrowed her eyes and spun in a circle. “It was definitely one of these ways.” She pointed her fingers in two opposite directions.

Shelly laughed. “That’s why they invented cell phones with GPS,” she said. She turned to Bree. “You coming?”

Bree didn’t answer. Tomoko and the others all turned along with Shelly. Bree was on her hands and knees, pulling tufts of grass from the ground.

“No, no, no,” Bree muttered.

“Um … everything OK over there?” Jules asked.

Kenzie skated to Bree. “What’s going on?”

Bree turned to the group. Her eyes were wide.

“My phone,” she said. She let a fistful of grass float away on the breeze. “It’s gone.”
